Fab Events: Sip & Sew DC

By  |

I enjoy sewing. Like, really enjoy being able to take beautiful fabric and turn it into something I can wear. Though my mother has mastered this particular craft and a sewing machine was a fixture in our home for as long as I can remember, I was never interested in learning to sew for myself. About a year ago, I stumbled on the fashion & DIY blog Mimi G Style (LOVE!), where I was first convinced… "oh I can DO this!" Since then, I've completed a few projects; a pair of pants here, a maxi skirt there with the regualrity of a pregnant woman on iron pills (read: not regular at ALL). With my mother so far away and no one to share this obsession with locally, sewing is usually a solo thing for me…until now. Enter Simply Cecily and 'Sip & Sew DC'!

Here's what Cecily had to say about this FAB event:

"It's going to be a cool laid back class where participants will get together and learn basic sewing techniques.  By the end of the class (if they've done more sewing than sipping :), they will complete a skirt with an elastic waist band.  They will also learn the basics of how to work with a pattern.  Everyone will have a chance to choose their own fabric, length and shape of skirt.  I've partnered with Tisha's Sewing Studio who will be co-teaching the class.  She teaches sewing at various fabric stores and schools around the area.  She's awesome!  The event is also co-sponsored by the Anacostia Arts Center and Nubian Hueman.  Of course, I encourage everyone to stop by Nubian Hueman and check out my latest collection as well as all the the other great merchandise that the boutique has to offer. I'll be giving away a free gift for those who shop my collection that day.

I'm so excited about this event. Seriously. Sewing and wine? Two of my favorite things!

What say you? Are you interested in learning how to sew? How about creating a one of a kind skirt that you can rock (and pop your collar like a #Boss cuz YOU. DID. THAT.)?

Simply Cecily Amina Dress Simply Cecily is a contemporary women’s clothing line that fuses the traditionally stylish nature of West African women with the contemporary flair of American design. The line is known for its use of rich vibrant fabrics and amazing silhouettes. The designs are simply Cecily – a reflection of who she is as an African American designer, entrepreneur, wife, sister and friend. They represent a lot of women today who want to express who they are through their clothing.

Inspired by her mother, Cecily Stewart Habimana began designing and making clothes as a young girl.  By the time she reached high school, she had launched her own label Simply Cecily by making clothes for friends, family and clientele. College proved to be no different as she showcased her custom-made designs in fashion shows and sold them to boutiques in Chicago and Washington DC. After receiving her MBA from George Washington University in 2009, Cecily spent a year in Senegal teaching and immersing herself in the culture. While there, she was inspired by the true elegance of Senegalese women and how they dressed on a day-to-day basis.
