Military-Inspired Hairstyle #VeteransDay

By  |

If you’re new around here you may not know this fun little fact: I’m a veteran.

#VeteransDay | The Style Medic

Yep, I served as a medic in the Air Force for 10 whole years!

Joining the military was definitely not on my list of things to do when I was in high school, but when senior year rolled around I knew that college wasn’t gonna be a good fit for me. I also knew that I had to do something with myself so joining the military was the next logical choice. At the time, I’d been in Air Force Jr. ROTC throughout my entire high school career and one of my older sisters was in the Air Force so the decision was easy (easy for me, not so much for my momma). With a recommendation letter from my ROTC instructors and my specialty already decided, I was all set and ready to ‘fly high’ two months before graduation and three months before my 18th birthday.

I turned 18 in July and I was headed to basic training by September. The moment I stepped off that bus in San Antonio, I knew I wasn’t in Kansas anymore (hehe). I was getting yelled at on SIGHT, but my sister had coached me so I wasn’t easily shaken. It only took a week or two before I called home in tears; I’m almost sure my momma was ready to get to Texas on the next thing smokin’. Ultimately, I made it through basic training, then tech school in Texas, to clinical rounds, and EMT training in Maryland, then flight school, and survival training and being a kick ass flight medic in Germany. Whew!

That’s actually how I came up with the name for this site. When I first started blogging, I wanted to leave my military and human resources experience out of it. I didn’t see how the old military me fit in with the new, no fatigue wearing, natural hair sporting me. I wanted to start fresh as a fashion loving mama who could sniff out a sale like a blood hound. But you know what they say about knowing where you come from.

After a chat with a business coach who was not feeling the original name, I huffed and puffed sat down and worked to figure out a way for my past, present and future to co-exist in one chic package. Voila! The Style Medic was born.

I am no doubt proud of my service and thankful for all of the training and amazing experiences my time in the military afforded me. I can’t say that I miss the uniforms and dress regulations though.

With all that said, this Veterans Day, I’ve teamed up with Suave® to support the women serving our country by sharing a military-inspired hairstyle. Even with more flexibile hair regulations, the thought of how to wear your hair in uniform can be intimidating. Now, while my hair tends to be more edgy these days and my color is totally out of regs, the style is perfect for women in uniform who want a quick, easy and chic look that’s in regs and in style. Check it out below:

That’s it! Simply flat twist your hair loosely on each side and pin in the back. I’ve been wearing my straightened natural hair in this style for a few days and have gotten tons of compliments.

Military Inspired Style | The Style MedicA smoothing cream like Suave Professionals® Luxe Style Infusion  Light Weight Weather Proof Cream will help keep this style frizz free.

  1. Cute post, I love an out of the box hairstyle so the military regs wouldn't work for me. The hairstyle you demonstrated is simple yet cute. Now that I can finally flat twist I will try this style out on my girl. The video was fun and flirty.  THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!!!!
