Last Minute Halloween Costume DIY

By  |

*clears throat* Hi, I’m T. and I’m a procrastinator.

Actually, I’m pretty great at procrastinating. If procrastination was an Olympic sport, I’d be a gold medalist. Also, I’d be late to the competition cuz I’m also perpetually tardy but that’s a whole other issue.

As a last-minute-late-coming-lazy-pants, I thought long and hard about how I could participate in all the Halloween merriment without having to invest too much time, energy or money. Oh yeah, I’m cheap fiscally responsible too.

Recently, I took my kiddos to a pre-halloween trick or treating event and needed a costume for myself so I scoured the interwebs to see if I could find something that fit all my criteria and then it hit me… Sugar Skull!

Lemme drop some knowledge on you:

The Sugar Skull or Calavera is generally used as decorative or edible skull made during the Mexican celebration of Día de los Muertos or the Day of the Dead. Día de los Muertos is a holiday that is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, where families honor their deceased loved ones. Traditionally, calaveras are made from cane sugar (hence the name sugar skull) and decorated with bold colors, glitter, etc.

The movie The Book of Life is a recent example of how beautiful a Calavera can be.the-book-of-life-catrina

As a momma to half Mexican kids, it’s very important to me that they learn about both African American and Mexican culture.

Back to my last minute DIY

Last Minute DIY Halloween Costume | The Style MedicI didn’t record the process because honestly I wasn’t sure how it would turn out, but I found this young lady on YouTube and pretty much followed along exactly.
For the makeup, the only thing that I needed to buy was white face paint which I got at party city. You can also find it on Amazon. For everything else, I used makeup I already had.

Eyes, contour and scalloping color: BH Cosmetics 88 color shadow palette

Lips: Naree Cosmetics Mega Matte Lipstick in Imperial Purple

Spider web, stitches, scalloping & nose: ELF cream eyeliner

The sugar skull look isn’t complete without a flower crown. I remembered this about 2 hours before event time, so lucky for me it only took about 15 minutes to make.

Here’s what you need:

  • Flowers – I used six black faux roses
  • Headband – I used a stretchy headband I already had but you could also use a metal one
  • Felt
  • Glue gun
Make it:
  1. Cut your felt to the length of your headband. I laid my headband flat and cut the felt to the same size.
  2. Glue your felt to the underside of the headband (the side that’ll touch your head).
  3. Take the flowers off of their stems and glue each flower to the felt paying attention to the spacing. I wanted mine big & bold which is why I bought bigger flowers.
  4. Let the glue cool/harden and you’re all done!

  1. This is so freaking cute and while I’m crafty I haven’t got the makeup skills. I guess God couldn’t give me all of the things. In years past I’ve dressed up, this year not so much.

Super cute DIY, and that price tag is winning for sure.

I loved it. Hooray for Halloween without the hassle of cheaply made but not cheaply priced costumes.
