Shine On: DIY Silver Jewelry Cleaner

By  |

Y’all know I’m a fan of saving money when possible and I happened to be perusing Pinterest when I found a few ideas on cleaning my silver jewelry with stuff I already had on hand. I’ve always preferred silver jewelry over gold but what I don’t like is when my silver starts to tarnish/darken and look all funky. I’ve tried this DIY silver jewelry cleaner a few times now and it’s worked every time so I’m sharing the love.

*I’ve only ever used this on 925 silver. I’ve never tried it on gold, or anything with stones so I wouldn’t suggest that.*

Here’s what you need:
  • Flat container (I used a plastic take out container)
  • Aluminum foil
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1/2 cup vinegar

While you’re boiling the water, get the rest of your supplies together and line your container with the foil (shiny side up). Lay your jewelry out in the container and make sure that each piece touches the foil (I’ll drop that science in a minute).

Mix the water, salt, and baking soda together and slowly pour the concoction into the foil lined container. If you need to reposition your jewelry, save your fingers and use a spoon or something.

Here’s where the science kicks in

Add the vinegar to the container and watch the bubbly, science-y magic happen. The tarnish will start to disappear and your bling (do we still say that?) will be all blingy again.

The tarnish (or silver sulfide/sulfur) likes aluminum more than it likes silver, so with the help of this little concoction, the sulfur breaks up with your silver jewelry in favor of the aluminum. #ScienceDropped

Now rinse, dry and shine!

If your tarnish is really bad, you can let your jewelry sit in the mixture a while or give it another treatment.

What say you? Will you try this DIY jewelry cleaner? Do you have a jewelry cleaning secret?
